Pull apart pigs in a blanket are a fun twist on classic pigs in a blanket. This is one appetizer recipe that is fun to make and eat. Dough, cocktail wieners, melted butter, and seasonings are baked together to a golden brown for this party favorite.

PULL APART PIGS IN A BLANKET RECIPE

You will need:

  • 1 tube Pillsbury pizza dough*
  • 2 (12-ounce) packages cocktail wieners
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes
  • Flour for the cutting board

*PRO TIP: The Pillsbury brand dough is bigger than generic or grocery store brands, so take that into account if you purchase another brand to prepare this recipe. 

SUBSTITUTIONS AND ADDITIONS

COCKTAIL WIENERS: You could also make these using hot dogs cut into smaller pieces. Lil’ smokies are also a popular choice for this recipe.

CHEESE: These would be delicious with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese, either inside with the wieners or on top of the bundle of pigs a few minutes before the end of baking.

HOW TO MAKE THIS PULL APART PIGS IN A BLANKET RECIPE

STEP ONE: On a lightly floured surface, remove the pizza crust from the tube and unroll onto the floured surface. Square it up. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter cut strips 1 inch by 2 inches. To keep your strips even, you can use the edge of a plastic cutting mat.

STEP TWO: In a small bowl melt the butter and add the Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and red pepper flakes. Brush the pizza dough with the butter mixture (there will be some leftover for later). Wrap each cocktail wiener in a small strip of dough and pinch the seam together.

STEP THREE: Grease the inside of an 8-inch springform pan or other round cake pan with cooking spray — you don’t want these little guys to stick after baking! Place the individual pigs in a blanket standing up in the springform pan, not packed too tightly. You can tip the pan at an angle while stacking them in so that they don’t tip over like dominoes while you’re working.

STEP FOUR: Brush the remaining butter mixture over the top of the filled pan. Bake covered loosely with foil for 30 minutes at 375°F. Then about 15 minutes uncovered to allow to brown without burning. Let cool for 10 minutes before removing from the pan.

PRO TIP: Place the springform pan on a baking sheet. This is sooo important so that you don’t end up with a mess in your oven from the melted butter and seasonings dripping!

HOW TO SERVE

Stack the pigs in a blanket on a serving plate with your favorite dipping sauces. We like ours with ranch, marinara sauce, ketchup, or mustard. You can use classic yellow mustard, go with spicy brown mustard, or honey mustard, based on preferences.

STORAGE

IN THE FRIDGE: Store your baked and cooled pigs in a blanket in an airtight container in the refrigerator, and they stay will good for up to 3 days. If you’d like to enjoy them for any length of time beyond this, you should consider freezing them.

IN THE FREEZER: Leftover pigs in a blanket freeze beautifully, and all you need to do to freeze them is allow them to cool to room temperature, then transfer them to an airtight, freezer-safe container or a freezer-safe zip-top, gallon-sized bag.

REHEATING: To reheat frozen Mini Pigs in a Blanket in the oven, place them on a baking sheet in a 350°F preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes.

Does this recipe have to be baked in a springform pan?

If you don’t have a springform pan, another 8-inch pan will work fine, when you are ready to serve, you will have to turn the pan over and allow the bundle of pigs to all pop out of the pan onto a plate to retain the pull-apart quality of the recipe.

Can I use crescent roll dough instead of pizza dough for this recipe?

These pull-apart pigs in a blanket could be made with crescent roll dough in place of the pizza dough. Just follow the cooking instructions for the crescent dough so that they don’t get too brown.
